Genealogical Society Hosts Digital History Program at the Westfield Meomorial Library

The Genealogical Society of the West Fields will host the public on Thursday , April 14, at 1 pm in the Westfield Public Libarary on the the library's local digital history resources and genealogical databases .Mrs. Schulze, Head of Adult Services at the library, is the speaker. Two years ago , the Library , in a joint effort with "The Westfield Leader", completed the first phase of a digital archive project that allows the public to view  issues of local newspapers and the Westfield High School yearbooks online at www.wmlnj.org. The online collection inclludes 100 years of "The Westfield Leader"; 100 years of the  Weathervan  (Westfield High School yearbooks), 17 years of Westfield "Record Press" now defunct, and issues of the "Union County Standard ," a weekly paper last published in 1915. The Oral History Project, a joint effort between the Library and Westfield Historical Society,recorded in the late 1950's - 1970's contains interviews of prominent Westfield citizens regarding the history and growth of the town, now online.

As a final topic, Ms. Schulze will demonstrate how to use two of the genealogy databases that the Library has online.:Heritage Quest and Ancestry.com. The digital archive, the Oral History project and the two databases can all be accessed by visiting the library's website at www.wmlnj.org and clicking on the tab "Online Resources".Ms. Schulze, has a MLS from Rutgers Universtiy and a BA in history from Mary Washington College.The meeting is free and open to the public.
