Musical Club of Westfield Celebrates National Music Week

MUSICAL CLUB OF WESTFIELD CELEBRATES NATIONAL MUSIC WEEK WITH MONMOUTH WINDS AND CARROLTON CHORALE

In celebration of National Music Week, the Musical Club of Westfield will hold its final program of the season on Wednesday, May 9 at 8:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 170 Elm Street, Westfield.  On the program will
be the Carrolton Chorale, conducted by F. Allen Artz, III, and the Monmouth Winds, accompanied on the piano by Mary Beth McFall.

Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitsky last week signed a proclamation designating May 6-13, 2012 to be National Music Week, the theme of which is “Music . . . Sounds That
Inspire”.  He presented the signed proclamation to Musical Club president Barbara Krause and Music Week chairperson Edna Borchers.

National Music Week, celebrated each year in May, was founded by Charles M. Tremaine, a longtime Westfield
resident, in 1924.  In addition to the evening musical program, the Musical Club will observe National Music Week with music-themed displays at the Westfield and Mountainside libraries.

The Carrolton Chorale, a 21-voice a cappella ensemble whose repertoire includes music of the Renaissance, Romantic era and 20th century, will present portions of
their spring program, entitled “Psaltery and Peppery,” comprised of psalm settings from throughout the ages, and madrigals and love songs depicting the trials of being in or out of love.  Led by conductor F. Allen Artz, III, the chorale will sing sacred and secular works by Thomas Weelkes, Orlando Gibbons, Orlando De Lassus, John Dowland
and others, with a little P.D.Q. Bach thrown in for fun.

The Monmouth Winds, a woodwind quintet comprised of members of the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra, will
perform Eric Ewazen’s Cascadian Concerto. The ensemble performed the concerto’s New Jersey premiere with the
Monmouth Symphony Orchestra in October, 2011, and this performance will feature a piano reduction of the orchestra accompaniment, performed by Mary Beth McFall.  Mr. Ewazen, on the faculty of Juilliard, is a prolific composer whose music is appreciated and performed all over the world.  The Cascadian Concerto, inspired by the Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest, features the
movements “Sundrenched,” “Windswept,” “Snowcapped,” and “Glistening,” and the descriptive music evokes images to match the titles.

The chairman for the program is Clarissa Nolde.  The
performance is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the program, to give those in attendance the opportunity to meet the performers. The Musical Club of Westfield, now in its 96th season, offers
scholarships to promising young musicians who are pursuing a musical education. Membership in the club is open to anyone who in interested  in music.  For information about joining the Musical Club of Westfield as a performer or an associate member may call the membership chairman at 908-232-2173, or visit the club’s website at  http://westfieldnj.com/mcw/
