Sheep to Shawl Festival

Springtime on an early American farm brought tilling, weeding, planting… and sheep shearing. The museum celebrates this colonial farm task in its annual Sheep to Shawl Festival.  The event takes place rain or shine.

The entire process of sheep shearing will be demonstrated as it was done in the 18th and 19th centuries.  The production of cloth and garments from woolen fibers continues with demonstrations of spinning, weaving, and knitting.  The museum’s volunteers will showcase 18th century farm skills, such as butter churning and “wash day”.  Children’s activities include a may pole, colonial games, a sheep craft and a tin piercing craft.

A bake sale and an herb sale will be conducted throughout the afternoon. Free homemade cookies and lemonade will be available in the Frazee Building.  The museum’s gift shop will also be open.
