(October 5, 2011) -The Westfield Memorial Library continues to offer three origami workshops as part of "Senbazuru Westfield," a community-wide project to create 10,000 origami cranes. The cranes will be sent to Japan, to survivors of the earthquake, tsunami and radiation leaks, in keeping with the tradition of Senbazuru, the folding of 1,000 origami cranes to send wishes of goodwill and recovery.
The workshops for Grade 4 and up will be held on Sundays October 16, November 13 and December 11. From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., participants will learn basic origami folds and make simple origami projects. From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., experienced origami participants will try out more advanced folding techniques.

Kathy Muhm, Coordinator of Youth Services, said, "I'm sure that those who participate will feel a connection with the Japanese people, and that by making and sending the cranes, they will be able to show their love and concern for all that they have been, and are still, suffering. The Japanese originated the concept of origami cranes symbolizing international understanding, cooperation and peace, so I am quite sure Westfield's supportive message to the Japanese people, in the form of ten thousand hand-folded paper cranes, will be received."
The workshops are free and open to the public. Register for the workshops on the library's website, or call the library's Youth Services Department at 908.789.4090, extension 3. www.wmlnj.org
