Man Killed In Carjacking On Garden State Parkway: Police

​An armed carjacking that occurred overnight ended with a man killed early Saturday on the Garden State Parkway, reports say.

ELIZABETH - An armed carjacking ended with a man killed early Saturday on the Garden State Parkway, according to police.

Keith Belton, 24, of East Orange was identified as the man who apparently carjacked a car in Elizabeth, led police on a chase on the Garden State Parkway and then was killed by a car as he tried to flee on foot, police said.

The incident started around 1:50 a.m. in the area of Spring Street and William Street in Elizabeth, and ended when the suspect was killed near the Irvington-Newark border, according to police.

The carjacking began when a male suspect approached an unidentified person occupying a white 2011 Nissan Maxima. The man pointed a gun at the person and then took the vehicle, according to police. The suspect sped away from the scene.

Later, State Police said they responded to a motor vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway near exit 143, and discovered a damaged vehicle on the side of the roadway. Police, after investigating the scene, then found an unconscious person lying on the roadway about mile away.

Police determined that the suspect, who was not identified, was struck by a passing Subaru in the sounthbound lanes after leaving the Nissan Maxima on the northbound side, and attempting to walk across the Parkway. He had a massive leg injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges will be filed against the driver of the Subaru.
