Fireworks Canceled In Union County Town Due To Thunderstorm Threat

Thunderstorms are forecasted for Monday night. Union County residents can still catch fireworks that are scheduled for Independence Day.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — Forecasted thunderstorms on Monday night have canceled the Independence Day Celebration and fireworks in Rahway.

"The July 5 rain date WILL NOT be taking place. Activities will be rescheduled for a later date TBD," according to the City of Rahway.

While Monday's fireworks are canceled there are a few others still scheduled for Tuesday in neighboring towns.

Summit

  • What: City of Summit’s 76th annual Fourth of July celebration
  • Where: Soldiers Memorial Field, at 5 Myrtle Ave., Summit
  • When: Tuesday, July 4

The community celebration will include entertainment, rides and amusements, and a food court.

The event will begin with a flag-raising ceremony at noon, followed by a decorated bicycle parade for children at 12:15 p.m. Entertainment will include concerts beginning at 1 p.m. The event will conclude with a fireworks display beginning at 9:15 p.m.

The walking track, playground, tennis courts, and lower fields at Memorial Field will close at 1 p.m. to prepare for the fireworks display. Roads adjacent to the field will close to vehicle traffic at 6 p.m.

The parking lot on Ashland Road next to the Memorial Field tennis courts will be closed all day on Tuesday, July 4.

The schedule for the event is as follows:

  • 12PM food court opens
  • 12PM flag raising ceremony
  • 12:15PM decorated bike parade for children
  • 12:45PM announcement of bike parade winners
  • 1PM Area Rock Tribute Band
  • 2:30PM Shazam Music and variety show
  • 4:30PM 100 Years of American popular music with the Raritan Valley Trombone Quartet
  • 5:30PM Mushmouth in concert
  • 7:30PM Daddy Pop in concert
  • 9PM lowering of the colors
  • 9:15PM fireworks

Springfield

  • What: Springfield's July 4th Celebration
  • Where: Meisel Avenue Park, 278 Meisel Ave, Springfield
  • When: Tuesday, July 4 at 5 p.m.

The free event will include food trucks, inflatables, a petting zoo, pony rides, trackless train, DJ and live entertainment from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and a concert from 8 to 9 p.m. Fireworks start at dusk. For more information visit springfield-nj.us.

Plainfield

  • What: Plainfield's 4th of July Celebration
  • Where: Cedar Brook Park, Park Dr, Plainfield
  • When: Tuesday, July 4, from 3 to 10 p.m.

The event will include a parade, concert, food trucks, vendors and a fireworks show. It will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop with a NJ line up hosted by Miss Jones and including The Legendary DJ Chuck Chillout, Grandmaster Melle Mel & Scorpio, Nice & Smooth, DJ Grand G, DJ Cheese, DJ Storm Norm, DJ Tactics, DJ Bookeem, and Cutmaster Cool V.
