The flags have gone up in time for the Memorial Day parade thanks to the work of a dedicated team of Boy Scouts who turned out in the rain at the weekend.
Boys from Troop 72 turn out no matter the weather to put nearly 80 flags up around Westfield in May and then take them down again in October.
“We always get a good turnout even on rainy days like Saturday,” said Assistant Scout Master Jorge Suris. “The boys of Troop 72 are proud to put up the flags and we were happy this year to see that over half of them were new.”
The Boy Scouts get an early start, usually meeting at 7am, to get the job done while there are less cars on the roads.
Supervisor Craig Gibson, in the Department of Public Works, says the townspeople of Westfield love to see the flags.
“Every year I get a great many comments from people who love to see the flags up,” he said.
“We greatly appreciate the work that the Boy Scouts put into this every year and we have a lot of veterans in the town who particularly appreciate it.”
Troop 72 is very grateful to Westfield Presbyterian Church who allow them to use their meeting hall every week.
