Franklin Elementary School Fourth Graders Celebrate MLK Day

WESTFIELD, NJ — On Friday, fourth grade teachers and students at Franklin School continued their tradition of celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Each fourth-grade teacher provided a Google Meet link as students "traveled" between the 6 fourth-grade classrooms to learn about Dr. King and to complete related activities. The stations included activities such as writing a poem to represent the civil rights leader's life, analyzing his quotes, and learning about his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Among the virtual activities was a picture of words that one class selected after reading the book "Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." by Doreen Rappaport. The students chose such words as freedom, equal, together, hope, courage, peace, respect, and love.

"This is an activity we do every year," says Franklin 4th grade teacher Beth Billing. "Normally students would move from classroom to classroom to participate in each station. This year, we had to adapt our stations so they could all be completed virtually."
