Fresh Food Vouchers Available For Union County Seniors

Eligible seniors can pick up vouchers at locations across Union County to help cover fresh fruits and vegetables.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — Union County officials are rolling out a program aimed at helping seniors access fresh, locally grown food this spring and summer.

The county’s Division on Aging is distributing Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers, which can be used at participating farmers markets for eligible produce.

Officials say the program is designed to support both seniors on fixed incomes and local farmers throughout the region.

“Last year, we handed out 1,700 vouchers that helped many seniors with low or fixed incomes access nutritious food, and we're looking forward to doing it again,” Commissioner Chairman Joseph C. Bodek said. “Your health and well-being are important to us. I strongly encourage eligible seniors to take advantage of this free resource and to apply.”

To qualify, residents must be 60 or older, live in Union County, and meet income guidelines. A single applicant must earn no more than $2,461 per month, while a married couple’s combined income must not exceed $3,337 per month.

Distribution will take place at several locations across the county beginning in mid-May.

Voucher distribution sites include:

  • May 19: Sampson Senior Center, Elizabeth
  • May 20: Union Senior Center, Elizabeth
  • May 21: Gregorio Recreation Center, Linden
  • May 27: Kenilworth Senior Center, Kenilworth
  • May 28: Peterstown Community Center, Elizabeth

Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Officials said additional local senior and community centers in Hillside, Roselle, Roselle Park, Plainfield, and Rahway can also assist residents with the program.

Commissioner James E. Baker said the vouchers are meant to supplement, not replace, regular food assistance.

“If any seniors are experiencing food insecurities, we encourage you to reach out to our Division on Aging to learn how we can help,” Baker said.

A limited number of vouchers are available and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. All vouchers must be used by Nov. 30.
