Houlihan/Sid Fay Fields Improvements Underway In Westfield

WESTFIELD, NJ — Work on the first phase of improvements at Houlihan/Sid Fay Fields in Westfield is underway and remains on schedule, according to Mayor Jeremy Berman.

In an update on the project, Berman said removal and replacement of the turf fields is nearly complete at the township recreational complex.

Berman said the next phase is expected to begin next week with preparation work for a parking lot expansion and construction of a new restroom and storage facility.

The work is part of a broader upgrade at one of Westfield's key recreation sites, according to the mayor's statement.

Construction will continue through the fall.

Berman said the Recreation Department is coordinating closely with town athletic leagues to relocate scheduled field time as needed while the project moves forward.

“While there will be some temporary inconvenience as construction progresses, we’re very enthusiastic about the end result: a long-overdue upgrade to one of Westfield’s key recreational facilities that will better serve our youth athletes and the broader community for many years to come,” Berman said.

In 2025, the Town Council unanimously approved a $2.34 million bond ordinance to fund improvements at Houlihan/Sid Fay Fields.

Those improvements included:

• Expanding parking from 45 to 119 spaces
• Constructing a multi-use structure for storage and team meetings
• Adding permanent restrooms & accessibility features

The cost of these improvements will be partially funded by $470,000 in donations from the Westfield Soccer Association and Westfield Lacrosse Club.

The cost is further offset by a $100,000 contribution from AT&T for the cell tower agreement, and a $300,000 donation to the Park Improvement Fund that was negotiated as part of the Westfield Crossing PILOT, according to the Town.
