Detectives identified the email's sender as a student from another state who saw threatening statements being made in a social media group chat they were participating in. They screenshotted the chat and forwarded them to an email address they found for Springfield Schools to warn of the threats, said police.
Detectives interviewed the student and were able to confirm the user account from which the threats were being made.

"Through the investigation into the account data, it was determined that all of the account information and related account activity originated from outside of the U.S. This information was verified and the threat was determined to be non-credible," said police on Monday night.
Out of an abundance of caution, police presence at Springfield Schools was enhanced throughout the school day Monday.
