Kelly Out, Tiller In As Westfield Fire Chief

Westfield Fire Department Chief David Kelly ended his career Friday after 27 years of service.

WESTFIELD, NJ - Friday marked the end of an era on Friday as Chief of the Westfield Fire Department David Kelly, retired after nearly 27 on the job.

Westfield Mayor Shelley Brindle noted not only Chief Kelly's service to the community, but that of his extended family.

"Kelly, a Westfield native, joined the Department on June 1, 1992 and has served as its chief since 2015. His succeeded his brother, Dan Kelly, who served the Department for 37 years. In addition, his father, Dan Kelly, was employed by the Department of Public Works for 44 years, retiring as its Director," Brindle said. “The Town of Westfield is so fortunate to have benefited from the Kelly family’s legacy of service, totaling an astounding 108 years.”

Deputy Chief Anthony Tiller will serve as the Acting Chief, effective immediately. The appointment was made by Town Administrator Jim Gildea, after receiving mayoral consent and approval from the Town Council. Acting Chief Tiller joined the Fire Department in 1997, following four years of service with the Westfield Department of Public Works.

“We are so grateful to Chief Kelly, and I know the residents of Westfield will join me in wishing him well in his retirement,” Brindle said.
