Union County Cop Injured After Patrol Car Rammed During Chase

KENILWORTH, NJ — A Kenilworth police officer was injured after a man reportedly rammed the patrol car during a chase on Friday.

On Friday at around 2 a.m., Kenilworth Police received information that a 2020 gray BMW registered to Mason Horvath of Middletown had allegedly driven into an Essex County Sheriff's Officer and fled, said Kenilworth Police Lt. Michael Scanielo.

The Flock Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system reportedly found Horvath's vehicle in Kenilworth.

Officers started a chase as the BMW tried to escape police throughout the borough, said Scanielo.

During the chase, Horvath reportedly rammed a marked Kenilworth Police patrol vehicle, causing minor injuries to the officer.

Kenilworth and Union Township Police continued the chase until it was terminated in Union Township.

Horvath was later arrested at his home in Middletown the following morning following an investigation by the Kenilworth Police Department Detective Bureau.

He was taken to the Kenilworth Police Department, where he was charged on a criminal warrant with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, eluding, and criminal mischief.

He was lodged in the Union County Jail pending a detention hearing.

The New Jersey State Police and Essex County Sheriff's Office are helping with the ongoing investigation, and additional charges are pending.
