Local musicians forced to practice alone in their own homes have managed to Come Together and perform an iconic Beatles song thanks to modern technology.

Come Together is the message students and staff at Garwood-based RMC Studios wanted to send to a community working together by staying apart to beat coronavirus.

Students from Westfield, Garwood and Rahway joined their teachers and even some parents for a joint performance playing instruments ranging from the electric guitar to the cowbell.

The challenges of bringing 26 individual performances together into one video fell to RMC owner EJ Gaub and Liz Robbins, the studio’s video editor.

Mr. Gaub explained: “We separated the audio from the video files and lined the audio up first. I remember I got goosebumps when I first played the audio back on my mixing console. This is everything music should be. This project connected us all together and connected us to music.”

Parents welcomed the opportunity for their children, deprived of their regular routines and time with friends, to connect with fellow musicians.

Marla Itzkin, mother of drummer Aidan Supranowitz, said: “Playing together when you can’t meet physically is a huge challenge. Even with the technology available to gather virtually, the smallest of timing delays makes playing cohesively nearly impossible.

“But RMC has made it happen! They got incredibly creative and have been going above and beyond for their music students and their families.”

RMC has already sent out details of their next joint project, a combination of Queen’s We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions.
