New Crosswalk Beacons, Ambulances, DPW Truck Purchases In Westfield

WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield's latest Council meeting focused on public safety and public works upgrades in town.

At the Tuesday meeting, the Council approved purchases for pedestrian beacons, a state grant application for ambulances, replacement trucks, and a shared services agreement tied to the town’s Conservation Center.

Mayor Jeremy Berman highlighted a few items on the agenda, mainly in the areas of public safety and public works.

He described a resolution for three pedestrian-activated flashing beacons at three intersections: St. Paul and East Broad Street, Brightwood Avenue and Clark Street, and West Broad and Osborne Avenue.

The resolution states the Westfield Police Department needs three Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons for pedestrian safety.

The purchase for $40,000 was approved through National Highway Products, Inc. of Millville.

Berman said the beacon locations were selected "following a review of both traffic data and other considerations by the Public Safety Committee."

The agenda also included a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs for $611,000 for the purchase of two ambulances.

Berman expects the grant to be "approved by the state this fall."

"Once approved, our intention is to lease the two ambulances to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, since they are the approved town transport agency in Westfield," Berman said.

Berman added, "This is an exciting opportunity to enhance public safety services within the town without using any local tax dollars."

On the public works side, the Council approved resolutions to buy one 2026 Chevrolet Mason Dump Truck for $134,000 and one 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 4WD regular cab work truck for $71,154.30, both authorized in the 2026 capital budget.

The council also approved a shared services agreement with Clark and Garwood allowing Clark and Garwood residents to use the Westfield Conservation Center.
