Newark Man Sentenced In Fatal Shooting Of Union County Man

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A Newark man was sentenced to 8 years in state prison for the fatal shooting of Steven Zimmerman, 31 of Hillside in 2021, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel and Hillside Police Department Officer in Charge Lashonda Burgess-Mason announced today.

Union County Superior Court Judge Regina Caulfield sentenced Darius Easterling, 31, on Friday for second-degree manslaughter, directing that he must serve at least 85 percent of that sentence before being eligible for parole.

Hillside Police went to the 1400 block of North Broad Street shortly before 10 p.m. on July 22, 2021, and found Zimmerman, who suffered from a fatal gunshot wound, according to Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Desimone.

"We are grateful for the hard work of Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Desimone and Homicide Task Force Detective Nora Berrio on this case," said Union County Prosecutor Daniel. "I hope this sentencing can bring some relief to those mourning Mr. Zimmerman."
