A system that dumped 2 to 4 inches of snow hit New Jersey late Thursday and early Friday, making a mess of the morning commute.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service announced a Winter Weather Advisory is in place for nearly the entire state.

State Police said there were 69 accidents on highways because of the snow: North: 14; Central: 14, South: 17; Turnpike: 11; Parkway: 13

  • Precipitation was to begin in many areas as rain, but as temperatures fell, the rain mixed with snow and changed to snow during the overnight hours.
  • Snow will impact the Friday morning rush hour and could cause slick spots, mainly on secondary roadways as well as on sidewalks.
  • Winds will move north at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. Temperatures will fall into the low 30s.

  • Weather related - New Jersey Turnpike: As of 5:51am, speed restriction and weather-related incidents on the New Jersey Turnpike in both directions from Delaware Memorial Bridge in Pennsville Twp to Interchange 8A - NJ 32 in Monroe Twp. Speed is 35 miles per hour due to roadway conditions, and plowing.
  • Weather related - Garden State Parkway: As of 4:48am, speed restriction and weather related incidents on the Garden State Parkway in both directions from Southern Terminus/CR 109 in Cape May to New York State Line in Montvale. Speed is 45 miles per hour due to roadway conditions, salting operations.
  • Weather related - Commodore Barry Bridge: As of 4:06am, speed restriction and weather related incidents on the Commodore Barry Bridge in both directions between New Jersey side and Pennsylvania side in Logan Twp. Speed is 35 miles per hour, until further notice.

The Weather Channel named the storm “Winter Storm Lexi,” saying it delivered a quick-hitting stripe of snow from the coastal mid-Atlantic into eastern New England Friday.

The storm was named on Thursday afternoon after winter storm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for more than five million people.
