Train Derailment Update: Raritan Valley Line Offers Buses, Limited Service
The NJ Transit rail service is still impacted for the evening commute and now offering limited service following a derailment on Tuesday.
UNION, NJ — Raritan Valley Line trains are now offering limited service for the evening commute following a Conrail freight train derailment.
"Due to a Conrail freight train derailment near Union Station, Raritan Valley Line continues to operate limited service between High Bridge and Raritan and hourly service between Raritan and Cranford. Substitute bus service will be provided between Cranford and Newark making stops at Roselle Park and Union," said NJ Transit around 4:35 p.m.
At around 6:50 a.m., a report came in that a freight train had derailed on the Conrail-owned section of the Raritan Valley Line near Union station, said NJ Transit.

"Initial reports indicate that several freight cars were off the track," said NJ Transit.
According to mycentraljersey, the number of freight cars that derailed is about 20 carrying containers.

"Patrol officers responded and found a train came off the tracks. Working with our Fire Department we determined it was a freight train and no one was hurt and there were no hazardous materials on the train," said Union Township Police.
NJ Transit and Conrail responded and Conrail workers removed the undamaged train cars. The trains are running on a modified schedule and should be back to normal within a few days, said police.
