Roof Fire Reported At Westfield Tire Center Early Friday Morning

WESTFIELD, NJ — A fire broke out on the roof of a local tire center on South Avenue East early Friday morning.

A report of smoke coming from the roof of the building at 343 South Avenue East came in at 6:44 a.m. The building which houses the Mavis Discount Tire Center is also connected to the Avis Rental Car Center, Westfield Fire Battalion Chief Scott Miller said.

When Westfield firefighters arrived they could see smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building. On the roof they saw that the HVAC unit was on fire, Miller said.

The fire was extinguished and firefighters had to force their way inside the two businesses, because they were closed, to make sure the fire didn't extend to the interior.

Inside both Mavis and Avis were filled with smoke and had to be ventilated. Some of the ceiling also had to be pulled down to make sure the fire didn't extend into the ceiling, Miller said.

Both businesses sustained smoke and water damage as a result.

One firefighter also suffered a minor injury, Miller said.

Firefighters were cleared of the scene at around 8:24 a.m.

Westfield received assistance from Cranford, Springfield and Linden fire departments.
