Summit Boys Lacrosse Team Bests Westfield to Clinch County Tournament Final

The boys defeated Westfield 9-5 to win the UCIAA championship finals Tuesday night.

The Summit Hilltoppers dominated the 2013 Union County Tournaments Finals Tuesday, with both the varsity boys taking down the Westfield Blue Devils in a heated match-up at Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark.

Led by top scorers Austin Carbone and Liam Mennig, the Hilltoppers went into halftime with a 6-2 lead over Westfield. Carbone, Mennig and Matt Maier had two goals each in the first half. Goalie Scott Caputo had two saves in the first half, but also gave up two goals to the Blue Devils.

Westfield put two more points on the board early in the third quarter, scoring two quick goals. Summit's offense picked up again in the fourth quarter, with Carbone scoring a goal (Mennig assisted) to bring the score to 7-4, with just over 9 minutes remaining. A goal by Mennig (Carbone assisted) brought the score to 8-4, Summit.

The final point against Westfield landed in the net courtesy of Mennig, with 2:14 left in the game, giving Summit a 9-5 win over Westfield.
