Trees In Downtown Westfield To Be Replaced

This is a continuation of 3-year plan that was designed to remove damaged or damaging trees and plant more appropriate species: Westfield.

WESTFIELD, NJ — Trees that were cut down recently in the downtown area of Westfield will be replaced, the town announced.

"This is a continuation of three-year plan that was designed by the Public Works Department to remove damaged or damaging trees and plant more appropriate species for individual locations in the downtown area," Town of Westfield, New Jersey posted.

The trees that were cut down had been planted decades ago and the species of trees were later determined to be inappropriate for the setting. Additionally, the Public Works reported receiving numerous complaints from property and business owners regarding the trees, including the roots causing damage to underground sewer lines and uplifting sidewalk slabs, branches damaging building facades, and species that encourage bird roosting resulting in excessive bird droppings, the town reported.

The next step is for the town to bring in equipment to remove all the stumps and then more appropriate trees will be replanted.

Deciduous shade trees will be planted in locations that are surrounded by more open space. If space is limited or there are overhead utility wires, ornamental trees with the proper maximum crown height will be planted. Weather permitting, the process only takes a few weeks.
