Union County Euthanized More Cats Than Dogs For 2015: Animal Shelter Statistics

Union County's licensed animal shelters euthanized more than 300 animals in 2015, according to state statistics.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — More cats were killed in Union County animal shelters than dogs last year, according to state statistics.

Earlier this month, New Jersey officials released statewide data from the 2015 Animal Intake and Disposition Survey, a voluntary survey of the state’s licensed animal shelters.

According to the state data, Union County shelters euthanized 84 dogs, 208 cats and 27 other animals in 2015. The number is relatively low compared to Essex County who euthanized 614 dogs and 1,524 cats.

  • 729 dogs and 1,121 cats impounded
  • 339 dogs and 740 cats adopted
  • 242 dogs and 21 cats redeemed

In total, New Jersey’s 2015 intake and disposition stats included:

  • 80,922 impounded animals
  • 10,914 redeemed animals
  • 38,948 adopted animals
  • 17,157 euthanized animals
