UNION COUNTY, NJ — Union County officials provide an update on the winter storm and how the county is handling it.

"First of all, Union County is a very transportation rich community. On the eastern side, we have the Turnpike, Newark Airport, the Goethal’s Bridge. On the western side, there’s the Garden State Parkway, Route 22 and Route 78. And we’re served by NJ Transit train service.

With all this, we are proud to say that our impacts appear to be minimal at this point. County roads are largely clear, and the day has been quiet. The County of Union, the City of Linden, Plainfield, Springfield, and Cranford have also opened up their emergency operations centers.

The County Public Works Department has about 65-70 pieces of equipment on the road. All of our tandem dump trucks are a combination of Salt Spreaders and Plows.

There are about 75-80 employees between Parks maintenance and Public Works on all of our 352 lane miles of roadway and Parks facilities, and close to 400 bridges and culverts also being cleaned. We also have smaller non spreader vehicles at all of our facilities for the parking lots.

A full repair staff on board in our Mechanic Shop in Scotch Plains.Since this storm is mostly during the regular working day, we have a full contingent of staff.Lastly, we urge all residents to stay off roads, and travel only as needed.

Check on your neighbors, especially if they are elderly and be mindful of any pets who are outdoors.

While power has not been an issue here, residents of Union County can also find a list of their respective utilities at our webpage at www.ucnj.org."
