Union Senator Looks To Stop Bear Hunts After Pedals Feared Dead
The legislation will be voted on in the Senate Economic Development & Agriculture Committee on Monday.
Union County Senator Raymond J. Lesniak (D-Union) has created a petition to stop bear hunts after news broke that beloved Pedals is feared dead.
The bear whose injured paw caused him to walk around on two feet like a human being, was reportedly a victim of New Jersey's bear hunting season, when a hunter who apparently had a vendetta for the beloved bear put an arrow through him.
Pedals had been spotted walking around New Jersey and was captured on video several times roaming the Garden State which quickly made him something of a cult hero.

Now Lesniak is circulating a petition to support S2702 which would stop bear hunts:
- Ends bear hunts for five years while a non-lethal bear control program is implemented. I expect this program will be a success and there will never again be a bear hunt in New Jersey.
- Prohibits bear feeding and deer baiting in bear habitats.
- Requires bear resistance containers in bear habitat areas.
"The hearing on S2702 will demonstrate that bear hunts only temporary decrease the bear population and increase interaction of bears with the public," Lesniak wrote on his Facebook page. "Bear hunts are unnecessary and counterproductive. Let's put an end to them. Support S2702."
