Veteran Memorial With Christian Cross Removed In Union County: Report

A veterans memorial depicting a solider bending over a grave with a cross was temporarily removed due to a lawsuit filed: report

ROSELLE PARK, NJ — A veteran's memorial statue in Roselle Park, which depicts a solider bending over a grave with a cross on it, is being temporarily taken down due to a lawsuit filed, according to tapinto.net.

The lawsuit filed by American Humanist Association includes Roselle Park councilwoman Charlene Storey and her husband Gregory Storey. They claim the memorial is an unconstitutional display because it features a Christian cross in front of the Roselle Park Veterans Memorial Library, according to tapinto.net.

"Due to the placement of the Cross Display outside the entrance to the Library, Mr. Storey and Councilwoman Storey believe it cannot be ignored or overlooked. Its location clearly makes it the property of and a statement by the Borough government," the suit stated.

The borough of Roselle Park and Mayor Carl Hokanson are both listed in the lawsuit as Hokanson had paid for the memorial with his own money.

The memorial was temporarily removed on Wednesday while the lawsuit is resolved.
