Video Footage Of Cop Shooting Man Outside Union Bar Released

UNION, NJ — The surveillance footage showing a fistfight and fatal shooting between an off-duty Newark Police Officer and a Piscataway man outside of a Union County bar in May 2016 was released.

The video, obtained by nj.com, was shown to jurors before they returned a guilty verdict on June 19 against Joseph Macchia, 37 in connection of the death of 37-year-old Michael Gaffney of Piscataway. Macchia could face five to 10 years in state prison on the second-degree crime.

He is scheduled to be sentenced July 27.

The video, which contains graphic images, shows a fist fight between Gaffney and Macchia that broke outside at Paddy's Place, a bar on the 900 block of Rosemont Avenue in Union early on May 13, 2016.

The fight resumes several times despite efforts from others to stop it. The video shows during the final clash between the two, Macchia pulls a gun and fires it three times after getting knocked to the ground.
