WATCH: Christie: N.J. Voters 'Want Me To Stay' - Not Run For President

The governor told Fox News: "I've heard that from lots of people at town hall meetings: 'Don't leave to run for president ... ' "

Gov. Chris Christie told Fox News Monday there’s a simple explanation for why polls say most New Jersey voters believe he would not make a good president.

“They want me to stay,” Christie told Megyn Kelly during an interview on “The Kelly File.”

Kelly, interviewing Christie in New Hampshire, cited an April poll in New Jersey indicating that 65 percent of the state’s voters believe he would not make a good president, while 29 percent believe he would.

The same Quinnipiac poll says New Jersey voters, by a 64-to-33 percent margin, believe he should not run for president.

“They know you the best,” Kelly told Christie. “Why shouldn’t we trust them?”

“They want me to stay,” he replied. A lot of those people in that 65 percent want me to stay, and I’ve heard that from lots of people at town hall meetings: ’Don’t leave to run for president because we want you to stay.’ “

Kelly pressed Christie, noting that the question dealt with whether he was a good president.

“People hear the question they want to hear. The fact is the polls in New Jersey will go up and down as well,” he told Kelly. “It’s bounced back and forth in five and half years because I do things, because I do things of consequence that people will either agree with or disagree with.”
