Westfield High School Students Expand Battery Program
The WHS Global Environmentalists Club expand their battery recycling program to the Westfield community.

The Westfield Global Environmentalists Club recently came up with a new innovative way that will promote recycling batteries in our community. The club is going to be placing a bin at the Westfield Memorial Library where the public can drop off their old batteries for recycling pick up during library’s operating hours.
The purpose of the bin is to promote recycling of batteries instead of just tossing them in the trash. The effects of just throwing out batteries are catastrophic. These batteries are just put into landfills which could cause toxic materials to leak into the earth's soil which could then get into the water supply. The battery recycling bin has been implemented throughout Westfield High School this and the year previous. The bin at the library will start on January 2nd, and will continue on until February 1st. The bin will return to the library in the month of June.
The WHS Global Environmentalists Club have used this bin both this year and last at Westfield High School, this resulted in them collecting over sixty-seven pounds of batteries. We hope the community will take advantage of the bin by recycling all their used batteries instead of throwing them out with the regular trash, preventing them from ending up in landfills and causing environmental harm.
