Westfield Memorial Day 2019 (Pics, Video)

This year's parade had the late Westfield High School Principal Dr. Derrick Nelson as honorary Grand Marshal.

WESTFIELD, NJ - The weather was picture, and video, perfect as the Westfield community gathered to commemorate those who gave their lives in service of their country.

The opening ceremonies began at 9 a.m. at the World War I Monument Circle and featured:

  • Remarks by Allan Betau, past commander of the Westfield American Legion Martin Wallberg Post #3.
  • Westfield Mayor Shelley Brindle's thoughts on the importance of Memorial Day.
  • Bob D'Arecca, Chaplain for Post #3 opening prayer and benediction.

Kerry Stubs sang an a cappella rendition of "God Bless America." Councilman David Contract shared video of the performance, which can be seen below:

After the opening ceremonies, the parade line of march directed by Barbara Verdic went from Broad and ended at Fairview Cemetery where a final ceremony by the American Legion at the Civil War section took place. The Westfield Community Band kept the marchers "in step" with a variety of patriotic music. This band, established in 1912, is among the longest standing community bands in the country.

This year's Grand Marshal was awarded posthumously to Derrick Nelson, Westfield High School Principal who passed away in April fter donating bone marrow to a sick child oversees. A contingent of Veterans lead the parade followed by members of the governing body and the Board of Education.
