ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A bear temporarily escaped its enclosure at the Turtle Back Zoo in Essex County on Thursday, but was recaptured shortly afterwards, authorities say.

According to county officials, the incident took place before the zoo opened to the public for the day. No visitors or staff were placed in any immediate danger, authorities said.

The geriatric animal – a 20-year-old black bear named Jelly – walked through an unlocked gate and was discovered by zoo staff in less than five minutes, just a few feet from her enclosure in an area that is not accessible to the public, officials said.
