Joy in Tough Times

Pastor's thoughts on the season

I know lots of people who are struggling to make ends meet.

I recently read an article about a woman who used government rations to pay for food stuffs and fell way short of her need. We need to be aware that the community food pantry exhausts their supply at faster rates than they anticipate.

Recently, I had a supply of warm blankets and clothing donated to my church in honor of a recently deceased member. We were able to get those needed commodities to people who need them and with the help of the West Orange PBA we made Christmas memorable for kids. People all over the community are stepping up and sacrificing so that everyone has enough. That makes me think about the real meaning of the Christmas season. Humanity says to those less fortunate "brother/sister, I/we care and are mindful of your condition, here is the help that I/we can offer."

I can't help but think that even though we really don't know what season it was or the date of the Lord's birth, we have come to celebrate Immanuel (God with us) this season because in so many ways we have opportunities we otherwise wouldn't to share the reflection in us that is Him. You see even God himself when He came into the world was in need; even helpless, unless his family took care of his needs. Let's honor the Lord and continue to be mindful and prayerful of those who God has placed in our midst to care for. I am reminded of the words of Jesus "When you did it to the least of these my brothers and sisters you were doing it unto me" If we do that well no matter what our belief system, we will appreciate and experience true Joy.

Merry Christmas
