Summit Chorale's 15th Annual 9/11 Memorial Sing: A Free Community Sing-In of Mozart's Requiem

The Oratorio Society of New Jersey (OSNJ), under the direction of Dr Sándor Szabó, will begin rehearsals for their 2026-27 season on Tuesday, September 1, at Union Congregational Church in Montclair, and is looking for singers in all vocal parts to join the choir. For the fall season, OSNJ will present Felix Mendelssohn’s monumental Elijah. The concert will take place on Saturday, November 14th, in Montclair. 
Choral singers have loved performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah
since its premiere in 1846 in Birmingham, England. According to writer Steph Martin, “For many conductors, performers and listeners, it is the perfect oratorio, combining all the dramatic musical elements required to bring this colourful story to life.” The musicologist R. Larry Todd, in his biography of Mendelssohn, wrote that Elijah, “was the crowning achievement of Felix’s career.” 
For the spring season, OSNJ will be performing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore and Sunrise Mass, by contemporary Norwegian composer Olja Gjeilo, date to be announced.
OSNJ welcomes new singers in all vocal parts – soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. No auditions are required, but previous experience singing choral music and the ability to read music are preferred. OSNJ is pleased this season to offer a 50% discount for new members 30 years and younger! Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, September 1, at Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Avenue, Montclair, from 7:30pm – 10:00pm. September 12th event at South Mountain Recreation Complex – Franciscan Charities invites the community to run, walk, volunteer and support Newark neighbors in need
Franciscan Charities, a Newark nonprofit that has grown from serving 12 meals on its first day to providing 2 million hot meals for more than two decades, will host its first 5K Run &amp; Walk on Saturday, September 12, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange.
The event will bring runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters together from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Franciscan Charities began more than 20 years ago as a small soup kitchen in the basement of St. Ann's Church in Newark. Since then, the organization has served 2 million hot meals, including approximately 140,000 meals last year.
Beyond meals, Franciscan Charities provides diapers and formula to families, school supplies and uniforms to children, winter coats, and holiday gifts. The organization's work during the COVID-19 pandemic was recognized nationally by the Obama Foundation, which featured Franciscan Charities as a "Story of Hope" and described the organization as "small but mighty." The City of Newark has also recognized Franciscan Charities as a "beacon of hope and inspiration."

Sept. 12 event at South Mountain Recreation Complex invites the community to run, walk, volunteer and support Newark neighbors in need.

From 12 meals on its first day to 2 million served, Franciscan Charities has spent more than two decades feeding Newark neighbors in need. Now, we are inviting the community to take part in that mission at its first 5K Run &amp; Walk on Saturday, September 12, at the South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange. The event will bring runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters together from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

An Essex County home inspector has built a free website that lets anyone look up the public records behind a New Jersey property &mdash; building permits, flood zones, fire history, property taxes, and more &mdash; by typing in an address.
The site, Permit &amp; Parcel (oprasearch.app), covers all 564 New Jersey municipalities and pulls only from official sources: state and county databases, FEMA flood maps, and the towns' own municipal codes. There's no account, no email capture, and no cost.
"I kept watching buyers fall in love with a house before anyone checked the paper trail &mdash; the open permits, the flood zone, what the town actually requires when a home changes hands," said Leo Betancor, a Certified Master Inspector based in Cedar Grove and the founder of the site. "All of that is public record. It just wasn't in one place anyone could actually use."
Alongside the main lookup, the site includes free single-purpose tools: a lead-safe inspection lookup showing which of the two state-required inspection methods each town uses under New Jersey's lead paint law, a searchable directory of every DCA-certified lead evaluation and abatement contractor sorted by distance, a fire-incident map built from more than 40 years of state fire records, and a radon map covering every municipality.
A companion site, njflood.zone, gives instant FEMA flood-zone answers for any New Jersey address &mdash; built after the federal government shutdown left FEMA's own map site unreliable &mdash; running on the site's own servers with the complete flood map data for the state loaded locally.
The project was recently featured in <a href="https://www.tapinto.net/towns/east-hanover-slash-florham-park/columns/at-home-with-holly/articles/deep-dive-conversations-what-the-house-won-t-tell-you" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">TAPinto</a>'s "At Home with Holly" column.
