Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said that thefts like those that took place last weekend are “crimes of opportunity.” He said that visitors to the county’s parks shouldn’t leave purses, wallets and other valuable belongings in full view inside unattended cars.

Fontoura said that people should hide their belongings well – or leave them at home – if they plan to leave their car unattended.
