Car Strike Near 2 West Orange Schools Kills Pedestrian

No criminal charges have been filed against the driver of the car that struck and killed Juliet Bergen, 72, of West Orange.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Police have not issued criminal charges against the driver who allegedly struck and killed a 72-year-old West Orange pedestrian a short distance from two local schools on Wednesday, authorities say.

The fatal collision took place around 7:36 a.m. as Juliet Bergen, 72, of West Orange, was walking in the area of Mount Pleasant Avenue and Kelly Drive, according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and West Orange Police Chief James Abbott.

The collision area is located just a few blocks from Mt. Pleasant Elementary School and Liberty Middle School.

According to prosecutors, a Toyota Camry struck Bergen and caused life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders transported Bergen to University Hospital in Newark, where she was pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m.

No criminal charges have been filed against the driver, who stopped and called for assistance, prosecutors said.
