East Orange Settles 5 Police-Related Lawsuits For $1.6 Million: Report

The lawsuits involve claims of sexual harassment, retaliation or discrimination. They were filed between 2015 to 2018, a report says.

EAST ORANGE, NJ — East Orange has reached settlement agreements for five police-related lawsuits over the past few years, a report says.

Between 2015 and 2018, several members of the East Orange Police Department filed sexual harassment, retaliation or discrimination lawsuits against the department and its senior officials, according to the Transparency NJ blog.

Five of those suits have settled for a total of $1,647,500, while two others are still open and are scheduled for trial later this year, Transparency NJ reported last week. See details about each settlement here.

Last December, the East Orange Police Department saw a shift in its leadership when Maurice Boyd, a longtime police captain in the city, was selected to lead the Department of Public Safety as its director. In addition to Boyd’s promotion, three East Orange Police Department officers — Captain Larry Martin, a 27-year veteran, Captain Carla Roberts, a 23-year veteran, and Captain Calvin Anderson, a 23-year veteran — were promoted to acting deputy chiefs.
