Student athletes, community members honored

The 38th annual Sports Awards Breakfast by the Orange/West Orange chapter of UNICO honored eight student athletes Sunday.

Eric LeGrand, the former Rutgers University athlete, who became paralyzed from an injury sustained while playing football, was the guest speaker.

Rachel Zimmer and Matthew Shaw from West Orange High School; Devlin Formey and Thomas Lynch of Seton Hall Prep; Sammi Jay and Dylan Karpel from Golda Och Academy; and Alaska King and Kevin Boateng from Orange High School.

Bruce and Linda D'Amato, a West Orange couple, were also awarded the Ben L. Spinelli Community Service Award.

Members of the township council, the board of education and Assemblyman John McKeon and Assemblywoman Mila M. Jasey also attended.

Mayor Robert Parisi chaired the event.
