Essex County Bodybuilder, 85: ‘Never Too Old To Exercise’

WATCH: "I started at an old age, but I went for it… and beat out a lot of young guys," an 85-year-old Essex County bodybuilder says.

EAST ORANGE, NJ — “You are never too old to do exercise.” If you want to know 85-year-old George Campbell’s secret to keeping fit in his golden years, that’s the skinny of it.

Campbell, an ex-bodybuilder and a resident of United Methodist Communities at Bishop Taylor in East Orange, still lifts weights and works out four times a week.

“A lot of people say, ‘You still working out?’” the soft-spoken Campbell said during an inspirational video, which recently captured a 2018 MarCom Award from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals.

Campbell first picked up weightlifting during his military service in Jamaica at the age of 37. But after immigrating to the U.S., he began to take it more seriously, entering himself into competitions.

“I started at an old age, but I went for it… and beat out a lot of young guys,” he recollects with a smile.
