‘Essex Ed’ Gives Groundhog Day Prediction For 2017

Is Essex County in for six more weeks of winter? And just who did Essex Ed predict will win Super Bowl 51?

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Essex County’s resident groundhog weather prognosticator has given his official prediction for 2017: six more weeks of winter.

The groundhog known as “Essex Ed” rendered his chilly prediction on Thursday afternoon, seeing his shadow during an event at the Turtle Back Zoo. The Groundhog Day legend states that if the groundhog sees his shadow, local residents will have six more weeks of bad weather.

In addition to his wintery forecast, Essex Ed predicted the Atlanta Falcons would defeat the New England Patriots in this year's Super Bowl, Essex County’s little twist to the Groundhog Day tradition.
