ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Hip hop legends the Fugees got a big nod of appreciation from East Orange on Thursday ahead of the 25th anniversary of their award-winning album, “The Score.”
Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Prakazrel “Pras” Michel earned a congratulations from East Orange Mayor Ted Green and the city council for the iconic album, which was released on Feb. 13, 1996.
City officials pointed out that “The Score” was recorded at the Booga Basement at 232 South Clinton Street in East Orange.

The same goes for East Orange, city officials wrote in a social media post.

“Members of the Fugees have maintained a connection to East Orange over the years, most recently with Wyclef Jean filming his ‘Hendrix’ video on South Clinton Street in 2016,” officials said.
Prior to taping Jean’s video, which also featured East Orange native Kyemah McEntyre, the singer-songwriter sat down with members of the East Orange All-Stars Cheerleading Team and other East Orange teens for a roundtable discussion about police brutality and the state of race relations in America.
Jean was also recently spotted supporting Burnet BBQ, a family-owned restaurant on Hoffman Boulevard, East Orange officials said.
Meanwhile, Hill has also kept a foot in Essex County, supporting the grand opening of her personal chef’s restaurant Spice N Thing on Main Street in East Orange in 2018.
