Helping Hands

Liberty Middle School Helping Hands Service Club members became part of an intergenerational St. Patrick's Day event when they volunteered to serve lunch at the annual Senior Citizen St. Paddy's Day Party held at the Toby Katz House in Degnan Park.  Club members not only served lunch but also entertained the senior citizens with their rendition of "County Eye Joe" and led the party-goers in "The YMCA."  Club members have been volunteering at this event for the past 6 years."

Helping Hands Club Advisor Jane Horwitz said, "The senior citizens love having our students serve, entertain, and interact with them.  Our students learn a lot about setting a table, serving, and interacting with senior citizens.  In addition, the Liberty 7th and 8th graders were able to see a West Orange police officer play the bagpipes and hear an opera singer perform traditional Irish songs.  It is a win, win situation."

"A great time was had by all."
