Hit-And-Run In East Orange; Newark Man Dies, Reward For Info

Essex County authorities are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Essex County authorities are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of a driver accused of killing a Newark man during a fatal hit-and-run in East Orange.

A vehicle struck Gerald Pettiford, 61, of Newark, while he was walking near 445 Central Avenue in East Orange on May 24, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Emergency responders transported Pettiford to East Orange General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m.

Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura’s Crime Stoppers program is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the fatal hit-and-run. Anyone with information can contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
