West Orange is getting ready to celebrate the holiday of Juneteenth, with a first-ever film festival set to debut in 2024.
WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange is getting ready to celebrate the holiday of Juneteenth, with a first-ever film festival set to debut in 2024.
Juneteenth, a federal holiday celebrated on June 19, is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.
To mark this year’s holiday, the West Orange Juneteenth Committee has curated three days of film screenings, panel discussions and talkbacks with directors, producers and actors. It will take place from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23 at several locations in West Orange. Learn more here, and reserve tickets here.

Here’s what to expect, organizers said:
“You will experience electrifying performances, riveting films, engaging youth programming, informative workshops, insightful academic discussions, and vendors. For aspiring theatre professionals seeking to advance their careers and connect with like-minded peers, or just movie enthusiasts, the weekend will have something you can do!”

All municipal offices in West Orange will be closed in observance of the 2024 Juneteenth holiday on Wednesday, June 19.
There will be regular trash and recycling pickup. There will also be regular jitney service, according to a municipal advisory.
