Kenneth Gibbons Ramps Up Campaign For West Orange Town Council: 2026 Election

WEST ORANGE, NJ — A longtime West Orange resident with an extensive background in finance is ramping up his campaign for town council in 2026.

Gibbons – a local small business owner and certified public accountant – has spent decades doing audits, accounting, taxation, budgeting, internal controls and financial analysis, including experience with major firms and running his own CPA practice in West Orange. He holds a master of science in taxation degree from Seton Hall University.

Gibbons told Patch he wants to put this professional expertise to work – this time on West Orange’s municipal spending.

“Financial oversight is one of the town council's most important responsibilities, which is why this experience matters,” he said.

“In my professional work, I regularly analyze rising costs and prepare cost-benefit analyses to help clients evaluate alternatives and determine which options produce the strongest financial results,” Gibbons said. “That same approach — identify the cost drivers, evaluate the alternatives, and determine what delivers the best financial result — is what I want to bring to the council's review of budgets, spending, contracts, debt, development agreements, settlements, and other financial commitments that can affect taxpayers for years or decades.”

“I want to bring an auditor's mindset to Town Hall, and I will always remember whose money we are spending: the taxpayers,’” he said.

According to Gibbons, he has a five-point plan if elected, which he is dubbing “SMART Leadership.” It includes:

• S — Save: “Fight to lower the tax burden and keep West Orange affordable by scrutinizing spending, budgets, contracts, debt, and major financial commitments to find savings, control costs, and ensure taxpayers get value for their money. I will support responsible economic development that strengthens our tax base while protecting existing residents.”
• M — Manage: “Bring business-minded, results-focused leadership to Town Hall. In my professional work, I have evaluated in-house versus outsourced operations to determine which approach provides the strongest long-term value. In many cases, my analysis found that an in-house approach provided greater efficiency and consistency than outsourcing. Outsourcing should not automatically be assumed to save money or produce better results. I would bring that same analytical approach to Town operations and service delivery: compare the alternatives, understand the true costs and savings, and consider the impact on service quality, employees, residents, and our community before major decisions are made.”
• A — Audit: “Strengthen independent financial oversight and accountability by digging into the numbers, questioning assumptions, and ensuring major financial decisions are supported by facts and sound analysis.”
• R — Roads, Safety & Quality of Life: “Focus on roads, traffic, parking, public safety, cleanliness, and neighborhood concerns. Residents deserve safe, well-maintained neighborhoods and responsive government.”
• T — Transparency: “Promote open and accountable government. Residents should understand how their tax dollars are spent, why major decisions are made, and their long-term financial impact.”

Gibbons added that his desire to make West Orange a better place to live is also a personal issue – not just professional.

“I have lived here my entire life, my family has called West Orange home for generations, and my daughter represents our fourth generation here,” Gibbons said.” I've watched this community grow and change, and I understand the affordability pressures facing homeowners, renters, seniors and families.”
