Mt. Pleasant School Saves Rainforest for Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, first grade students at Mt. Pleasant School gave a Big Gift to the Earth by donating $150.00 to preserve over 3 acres of the Peruvian Rain Forests. The three classes completed a rain forest unit, utilizing resources in their classrooms and the LMC to research rain forest animals and compose reports. During this time, students also learned about the importance of preserving this diverse habitat, and much that it has to offer both people and animals. With this knowledge, students voted to actively conserve, and generously donated funds to the non-profit organization Earth’s Birthday Project, which has been proudly protecting rain forests in all parts of the world since 1991.

“It’s important for students to connect their learning to the real world,” says library media specialist Jenna Bleeke, who has organized collections to preserve rain forests for more than 5 years. “They are excited about making a difference and we are proud of them.”
