NJ's 200 Safest School Districts In 2018

At least seven threats have taken place at New Jersey schools over the past week. And students and educators are on edge following the school shooting tragedy that left 17 dead in Florida.

A number of school districts are being recognized for the steps they've taken to make students safe.

Niche.com, which specializes in all different types of consumer rankings, has provided a list of the safest school districts in the United States and New Jersey. Below is a list of the 200 safest school districts in New Jersey.

Some of these districts, ironically, also appeared high on Patch's Monday list of 578 schools that had incidents involving weapons in 2016-17.

Topping the list was Pompton Lakes in Passaic County, which was also listed number 4 nationally. A reviewer remarked about the district's warm-and-friendly atmosphere, saying: "Going to Pompton Lakes High School is a blessing. It's not like a regular high school. When you walk into the school it feels like home, every staff member knows your name."

East Brunswick was number 2 an number 9 nationally. Just this past week, East Brunswick High School student was arrested after allegedly making a terroristic threat in an online post, school officials said. The district also plans to place armed police officers at each school building in response to the Florida shootings.

The rankings were based on student and parent ratings of health and safety, area crime rates, and rates for expulsion, suspension, and school related arrests. Read more on how this ranking was calculated.
