New Street Design Tested In West Orange, Town Seeks Feedback

WEST ORANGE, NJ — A new street design is being tested in West Orange and the township is seeking feedback from local residents about the changes.

The Township of West Orange and EZ Ride is installing a temporary pedestrian safety demonstration project at the intersections of Gregory Avenue and Mitchell Street/Gregory Place. The temporary project will be in place from Sept. 16 to Dec. 15.

According to a municipal advisory, the goal is to redesign the intersections with curb extension, free-standing delineators, in-street pedestrian crossing signs and “SLOW PED XING,” which will accomplish the following:

• Remind drivers to approach the intersection with caution
• Narrow the roadways to slow turning traffic to safeguard pedestrians
• Prevent illegal parking on corners so that pedestrians can see traffic and drivers can see pedestrians waiting to cross
• Shorten the crosswalks so pedestrians are exposed to less traffic
