WATCH: West Orange Man Breaks USA Record For Days In Space

West Orange native Scott Kelly has now spent 383 days living in space, NASA says. Learn about his mission here.

It’s official… New Jersey’s Scott Kelly has spent more time in space than any other U.S. astronaut.

On Friday, Scott Kelly of West Orange broke a space flight record when he spent his 383rd day living in space, surpassing U.S. astronaut Mike Fincke’s previous record of 382 cumulative days, NASA stated in a release.

Along with Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko, Kelly is participating in studies that provide new insights into how the human body adjusts to weightlessness, isolation, radiation and stress of long-duration spaceflight.

“Breaking such a record for time in space is important because every additional day helps us better understand how long-duration spaceflight affects bodies and minds, which is critical to advancing our journey to Mars,” NASA stated.

Kelly will break another record on Oct. 29 on his 216th consecutive day in space, when he will surpass astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria’s record for the single-longest spaceflight by an American, NASA stated.
