N.J. Condo Board Wants Doggy DNA Samples From Pet Owners: Reports

A New Jersey condo association is stirring up controversy with an attempt at playing dog-doo detective, reports say.

West Orange, NJ – A New Jersey condo association is stirring up controversy with a reported attempt at playing doggie doo detective.

Sick of dealing with dog waste allegedly left around the property, board members of Eagle Ridge, a condominium complex in West Orange, want their pet-owning residents to submit a DNA sample for each animal in their custody, CBS New York reported.

Pet owners who don’t scoop the poop would face fines ranging from $100 to $250, reports stated.

Some residents have lambasted the proposal, saying that it unfairly victimizes all pet owners regardless of their whether they clean up after their pets or not. But advocates of a pet DNA requirement say that the move would be for the public good.

“Condo boards have a lot of authority to enact rules for the benefit of the people,” attorney Frank Marciano told CBS New York.

A final decision on the issue is reportedly slated for March.
