Oranges, Maplewood NAACP Earns High Honors, ‘Standing Ovation’
The Oranges and Maplewood NAACP branch is the oldest in New Jersey and the third oldest in the nation.

The Oranges and Maplewood NAACP Branch (omnaacp.org) recently achieved high honors by capturing a gold medal and a $10,000 ‘Write Her Future‘ scholarship from Lancôme, during the national ACT - SO (Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) competition, held during the NAACP National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts.
Additionally, the branch was bestowed kudos as recipient of the prestigious “Standing Ovation Award” at the NAACP Membership Luncheon for its exemplary efforts to foster dramatic growth of the membership during the past year.

The students that achieved recognition at the ACT-SO Awards Ceremony held on July 29, were as follows:
- Christian Justice, a rising Senior at West Orange High School. Christian won the Gold Medal in Humanities: Short Story category.
- Jamie M. Ross, a graduate of Columbia High School, Maplewood, NJ, won the $10,000 ‘Write Her Future’ Scholarship Program as sponsored by Lancome Cosmetics. Jamie will be attending the University of Connecticut and will major in Physiology and Neurobiology at the main campus in Storrs, CT.
The Oranges and Maplewood NAACP Branch is the oldest branch in the state of New Jersey and the third-oldest in the nation. The current leadership team is moving an agenda of advocacy and engagement to foster transformative change.

The branch represents 11 communities in Essex County, including: Belleville, Bloomfield, East Orange, Livingston, Maplewood, Millburn, Orange, Nutley, South Orange, Verona and West Orange.
