The West Orange PAL Pee Wee Mustangs started the season just like last year — with a big win (32-0) at Orange. Lead by Head Coach Andrew Mazurek the team is off to another successful year with eyes on an undefeated season and a second Twin Valley Conference Championship.
Makhi Green led the team in rushing with 74 yards on 4 carries with 2 touchdowns and a 2 point play. His 30 yard TD was the play of the day as he turned in move upon move to the Orange defenders all the way to the end zone. Divine Zaire added to the scoring with an exciting 58 yard punt return TD early in the game. Zander Lipsey, Shakhi Carson and Dorian Rawls also added to the strong run game totaling 62 yards together. The offensive line lead by Chris Parsons, Zander Timothy, Syncere Flanagan, Adrian Charles, Jahsil Ashe and Jordan Quiles opened big holes all day. Also adding to the offensive strength were Aidan Healey and JJ Scavalla. The Mustangs also looked good passing with Jayson Raines catching two passes for 17 yards, one going for a TD from QB Sean Brown. The final drive was highlighted by nice runs from Hunter Bonaparte, Adam Ashby and Gilberto Robinson, who had two carries for 50 yards on the final drive. The last one went for 22 and a TD to end the game.
The defense put up a big shut out. Parsons had big hits and led with 4 tackles and a sack. Carson had 3 tackles and an amazing interception. Raines had 2 sacks and 3 tackles. Other players with strong defensive efforts were Adam Ashby, Jordan Quiles, Pharelle Brun and Jared Massay. Bowen Wright, Gavin Rembert and Larry Verducci also came in and made nice plays in the second half. Healey also made excellent kicks on special teams to keep Orange away from the end zone. The Mustangs outgained Orange 232-28 in total yards.
Monday night was another win as well as a lot of fun for the Mustangs. They put up a 13-0 win at Clifton. Gilberto Robinson started the scoring with an 80 yard touchdown run. He completed a Mustang first by scoring in both games in the same week!
Aidan Healey later scored on a counter and then also caught the extra point from Colton Lehrer. Colton did a great job leading the offense in his first start at QB. Adam Ashby, Hunter Bonaparte, Zander Lipsey, Miles Morgan and David Pedo did a good job leading the squad and helping the new players. Bowen Wright, Tajir Brown, Gavin Rembert, JJ Scavalla, Larry Verducci, Anthony Chapman, Austin Cowley and Syhan Webb did a great job on defense to hold the shutout. Brandon Ali-Ramproop, Aidan Carter, Marco Davino, James Flowers, Marcus Green, Andrew Merklinger, Tommy Minichillo, Sean Tandy and Jordan Reynoso added nice plays on both sides of the ball throughout the game. Surpreme Zaire also added some nice runs during the game. The Mustangs showed great teamwork to get these two big wins to start the season.
The Mustangs are gearing up for their season home opener against Paterson this Sunday, September 20, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the High School stadium. Come on out and show your support for these amazing players and coaches.
